Remote Microphone Systems

Children with hearing loss often face challenges understanding speech in noisy environments like classrooms, playgrounds, or group activities. Remote microphone systems (also called FM or DM systems) are powerful tools designed to bridge this gap—helping children hear more clearly, confidently, and effectively.

What Is a Remote Microphone System?

A remote microphone system includes:

A microphone worn by the speaker (like their teacher)

A transmitter and receiver that sends the speaker’s voice directly to the child’s hearing device (hearing aids or cochlear implants)

Each child has what is called a listening bubble. This phrase refers to the area around a child where they can clearly hear and understand speech.

A child with hearing loss only has a listening bubble of 3 feet. RMS helps expand this bubble by delivering the sound directly to the ears, the system reduces background noise and the effects of distance—ensuring the child hears speech clearly, even in noisy or large spaces.

Benefits for Children

Improved Speech Understanding: Helps children hear the speaker more clearly, even in challenging listening environments.

Better Learning Outcomes: Enhanced access to spoken instruction supports academic performance and language development.

Increased Confidence: Children are more likely to participate and engage when they can follow conversations and instructions easily.

Support for Social Interaction: Easier communication helps children connect with peers, teachers, and family members.

Compatible Technology

Most modern hearing aids and cochlear implants are compatible with remote microphone systems.

Beginnings SC offers a variety of Remote Microphone Systems and can order additional options based on your child’s specific needs.

FAQs

  • What is a Remote Microphone System (RMS)?

We do not often get false positives. Our machine is calibrated as needed and our screeners are well trained. It is more likely that there is something preventing a pass result- but it does not always mean hearing loss. Many children fail one to two screenings as a result of fluid behind the eardrum - which may or may not be infected.

  • How does an RMS help my child?

RMS reduces background noise and improves access to speech from a distance, helping your child hear their teacher’s voice clearly, which supports speech, language, and social development.

  • At what age can my child start using an RMS?

Children as young as a few months old can benefit from RMS if they wear hearing technology and have been assessed by an audiologist. It’s especially helpful in early education settings where language exposure is critical.

  • Is it possible to use a Remote Microphone System (RMS) with any type of hearing device?

Yes! We have systems compatible with various hearing devices, with the capability to order more if needed.

  • How much does an RMS cost from Beginnings?

Our RMS comes at no cost to you or your childcare facility!

  • Is my child eligible for an RMS from Beginnings?

Beginnings serves children that meet the following criteria:

    • Between the ages of 0 - 5
    • Utilizes a listening device
    • Attends a licensed childcare center in the state of South Carolina
  • Is an RMS necessary in a childcare setting?

Yes, childcare centers can be noisy and acoustically challenging. An RMS ensures your child can access language throughout the day, improving communication and participation.

  • How do childcare staff use the RMS?

Staff wear a microphone around their neck throughout the day. Beginnings SC will train staff on how to use, charge, and troubleshoot the equipment properly.

  • What if the device stops working while my child is at childcare?

Childcare staff will be trained to identify common issues and perform basic troubleshooting. We will also provide our contact information to assist with any issues as they arise.

  • Will other children notice or interfere with the equipment?

Most RMS components are small and discreet. Educators can help foster a respectful and inclusive environment. Children typically adjust quickly and accept the equipment as part of their peer's needs.

  • Can RMS be used outdoors or during playtime?

Yes! The RMS can be used in a variety of settings, including being outside.

  • Will using an RMS interfere with my child’s ability to hear others?

No. RMS are designed to enhance the primary speaker’s voice without blocking other environmental sounds, allowing your child to hear both the teacher and ambient noise

  • Do childcare staff receive training on RMS?

The staff at Beginnings will provide initial training upon installation of the RMS, as well as ongoing assistance with the RMS as needed.

  • Who can I contact if I have concerns about the RMS at my child’s center?

Please contact our DSS Programs Manager at gaia@beginningssc.org if you have concerns about the use of an RMS at your childcare center.
