Remote Microphone Systems

Children with hearing loss can have trouble understanding speech in noisy places like classrooms, playgrounds, and group activities.

Remote microphone systems (also called FM or DM systems) help solve this problem. They make it easier for children to hear clearly, build confidence, and stay engaged.

What Is a Remote Microphone System?

A remote microphone system includes:

A microphone worn by the speaker (like their teacher)

A transmitter and receiver that sends the speaker’s voice directly to the child’s hearing device (hearing aids or cochlear implants)

What is a “listening bubble”?
Each child has a “listening bubble.” This is the space around them where they can clearly hear and understand speech.

For many children with hearing loss, this space is about 3 feet. Sounds that are farther away or mixed with background noise can be hard to understand.

Remote microphone systems help expand this listening bubble. They send sound directly to the child’s ears, reduce background noise, and make it easier to hear— even in noisy or large spaces.

Benefits for Children

Improved Speech Understanding: Helps children hear the speaker clearly, even in noisy or busy environments.

Better Learning Outcomes: Enhanced access to spoken instruction supports academic performance and language development.

Increased Confidence: Children can participate and engage more when they understand instructions and conversations.

Support for Social Interaction: Clearer communication helps children connect with teachers, classmates, and family members.

Compatible Technology

Most modern hearing aids and cochlear implants are compatible with remote microphone systems.

Beginnings SC offers a variety of Remote Microphone Systems and can order additional options based on your child’s specific needs.

Supporting Your Child’s Listening Journey

Remote microphone systems can be an important part of a child's hearing care plan. When used with properly fitted hearing devices and ongoing support, they can have a lasting impact on a child’s learning, confidence, and overall well-being.

FAQs

  • What is a Remote Microphone System (RMS)?

An RMS (also referred to as an FM System or DM System) is a wireless device that helps children hear speech more clearly, especially in noisy environments like childcare centers. It consists of a microphone worn by the speaker (usually the teacher) and a receiver connected to the child’s hearing device (hearing aid, cochlear implant, or bone conduction device).

  • How does an RMS help my child?

RMS reduces background noise and improves access to speech from a distance, helping your child hear their teacher’s voice clearly, which supports speech, language, and social development.

  • At what age can my child start using an RMS?

Children as young as a few months old can benefit from RMS if an audiologist assesses them and they wear hearing technology.  It’s especially helpful in early education settings where language exposure is critical.

  • Is it possible to use a Remote Microphone System (RMS) with any type of hearing device?

Yes! We have systems compatible with various hearing devices, with the capability to order more if needed.

  • How much does an RMS cost from Beginnings?

Our RMS comes at no cost to you or your childcare facility!

  • Is my child eligible for an RMS from Beginnings?

Beginnings serves children that meet the following criteria:

    • Between the ages of 0 - 5
    • Utilizes a listening device
    • Attends a licensed childcare center in the state of South Carolina
  • Is an RMS necessary in a childcare setting?

Yes. Childcare centers can be noisy and hard for children with hearing loss to hear clearly. A remote microphone system (RMS) helps your child understand speech throughout the day, making it easier to communicate and participate.

  • How do childcare staff use the RMS?

Staff wear a microphone around their neck throughout the day. Beginnings SC will train staff on how to use, charge, and troubleshoot the equipment properly.

  • What if the device stops working while my child is at childcare?

Childcare staff are trained to recognize common issues and perform basic troubleshooting. If further help is needed, our team is just a call or email away.

  • Will other children notice or interfere with the equipment?

Most RMS components are small and discreet. Teachers can help create a respectful and inclusive environment. Children usually adjust quickly and accept the equipment as a normal part of their classmate’s needs.

  • Can RMS be used outdoors or during playtime?

Yes! The RMS can be used in a variety of settings, including being outside.

  • Will using an RMS interfere with my child’s ability to hear others?

No. Remote microphone systems are designed to boost the speaker’s voice without blocking other sounds. Your child can hear both the teacher and what’s happening around them.

  • Do childcare staff receive training on RMS?

The staff at Beginnings will provide initial training upon installation of the RMS, as well as ongoing assistance with the RMS as needed.

  • Who can I contact if I have concerns about the RMS at my child’s center?

If you have questions or concerns about using an RMS at your childcare center, please contact our DSS Programs Manager at Gaia@beginningssc.org.

  • What RMS does Beginnings use?

BSC has Roger 20s, Roger 21s, Roger Xs and Touchscreen Microphones on hand and are able to obtain more for other models of listening devices!
